A Julian Lewis-led Colorado Buffaloes (3-7, 1-6 Big 12) will welcome the Arizona State Sun Devils (7-3, 5-2) for their final home game of the season.
Coming off their final bye week, Colorado had some reflecting to do in their time off. The Buffs have been on a three-game losing streak, during which they’ve been outscored 134-46. Although the issues looked slightly improved, Colorado will have a step up in competition against the Sun Devils.
Head coach Deion Sanders had his usual high praise for coach Kenny Dillingham during Tuesday’s press conference.
“Coach Dillingham, love him to life, man. One of my classmates, you know, we came in at the same time,” Sanders said. “What he’s done for that program is unbelievable…So I’m happy for the opportunity to play against this team.”
Colorado’s offense was more efficient with Lewis at the helm, but it will need to build upon the connection with wide receiver Omarion Miller. The two have combined for a touchdown in each of the last two games for Colorado.
An injured offensive line has hurt Colorado’s run game, but with the return of Jordan Seaton, they are looking to get back to their dominant ways. Micah Welch is the team’s leading rusher with 313 yards, averaging 3.9 yards per carry.
Sanders had simple expectations for his group at home.
“Quarterback developing, offensive line doing their jobs, defense standing stout, not giving nothing cheap, none deep,” Sanders said. “Getting to the ball, being physical, because not only are you wanting to win, but you are evaluating.”
Sanders’ team will be evaluating against ASU backup Jeff Simms, who has been playing in place of the injured Sam Leavitt. He has tossed five touchdowns for 566 yards for the Sun Devils this season. An experienced player, Simms has the potential to hurt the Buffaloes if not accounted for.
He’ll be looking to connect with former Buffalo Jordyn Tyson, who is leading the team with 628 yards and eight touchdowns. On the ground, Colorado will have to watch Raleek Brown, who is averaging 5.4 yards per carry and has three touchdowns. ASU’s offense, behind Dillingham, will look to attack CU’s secondary.
As Colorado continues to build for the future, the game could begin to determine roster spots for next season and which areas Colorado will need to address in the offseason.
Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm CST on ESPN 2.
